Chrysanthemums bloom in early autumn, adding beautiful bursts of color to Philadelphia’s countryside. This annual celebration of fall’s favorite flower wraps up this week, transforming the conservancy at Longwood Gardens into a living work of art. Outdoors, the family-favorite Garden Railway adds a whimsical touch to the season with dozens of miniature locomotives making their way through a multi-level display.

Vibrancy and imagination abound during our spectacular Chrysanthemum Festival. We stretch our horticultural limits by nurturing and training specialty chrysanthemum forms—from eye-catching spirals to dreamy clouds to soaring baskets—all bursting with color from start to finish, making for a radiant Conservatory bursting with personality. And thanks to the display capabilities made possible by our newest nursery production greenhouse, we were able to force more chrysanthemums to flower earlier than we ever have before. The result is stunning, lush color you’ll enjoy throughout the entire Chrysanthemum Festival season.
Also on view this year are seven strikingly beautiful bonsai new to our collection and proudly displayed in our East Conservatory, as well as chrysanthemum bonsai in our Peirce-du Pont House Conservatory.
Outside, explore our painted vistas as they change with the season, enjoy family fun in our fanciful Garden Railway, and find autumnal awe at every turn.
